This article presents a forgotten manuscript of a personal account of one of the first Jewish settlers who departed from Romania to Palestine in 1882 and helped found the colony of Samarin, which was later taken over by Baron de Rothschild and renamed Zichron Yaakov. Friedrich Horn, a schoolmaster with Austrian nationality who had settled in Romania fifteen years before his departure to Palestine, gave the manuscript of his unfinished work Nationaltraum der Juden to Moses Gaster. Gaster kept it (...) among his collection of manuscripts. He considered it a diary rather than as Horn obviously had in mind, a contribution to historiography intended to be published. The text provides significant evidence concerning the underappreciated role of Jews from Romania in the historiography of Zionism. (shrink)

The German-Jewish writer and poetess, Rose Ausländer, who came from Chernivtsi, capital of Bukovina, one of the former provinces of the Hapsburg Empire, is one of the most highly acclaimed lyric poets to have written in German in the 20th century. Throughout her whole life she was an adherent of the philosophy of Spinoza, first becoming acquainted with it in the so-called “ethics seminar” of the secondary-school teacher Friedrich Kettner. In the wake of the First World War the youth (...) of Chernivtsi were in need of new sources of intellectual stimulation, so he set out to introduce them to the philosophy of Spinoza, as well as to that of Constantin Brunner, a contemporary German philosopher influenced by him. Rose Ausländer remained a follower of Spinoza right up to the end of her life. This is confirmed by her two very different poems of the same name, “Spinoza”—the first composed before 1939, the second in 1979—as well as by her many explorations of topics drawn from his ethics, ranging from her very first printed poem, “Amor Dei,” up to her lyrics written in old age, in the 1970s and 1980s. In this short paper I will attempt to chart the course of, and analyze, her interest in Spinoza's philosophical system and life. (shrink)

Nos proponemos indagar la recepción de la Ilustración en Friedrich Nietzsche. Encontramos en sus escritos publicados y póstumos no solo una evaluación o balance crítico de los alcances de este movimiento en sus distintas expresiones, sino también el ensayo de continuar con algunas de sus tareas, a partir de una praxis filosófica de carácter experimental. Consideramos, por lo tanto, que la noción de Aufklärung, con los giros y los matices esbozados por el propio pensador alemán, merecen un renovado y (...) detenido análisis, tanto por los aportes que pueden hacerse en el campo de la exegesis crítica e histórica del corpus nietzscheano, como por la posibilidad de reconstruir, en parte, el modo en que ingresa la corriente ilustrada en la filosofía europea de mediados y segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Shows the relevance of Schiller’s thought for contemporary philosophy, particularly aesthetics, ethics, and politics. This book seeks to draw attention to Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805) as a philosophical thinker in his own right. For too long, his philosophical contribution has been neglected in favor of his much-deserved reputation as a political playwright. The essays in this collection make two arguments. First, Schiller presents a robust philosophical program that can be favorably compared to those of his age, including Rousseau, Kant, Schelling, (...) and Hegel, and he proves to be their equal in his thinking on morality, aesthetics, and politics. Second, Schiller can also guide us in our more contemporary philosophical concerns and approaches, such as phenomenology, hermeneutics, aesthetics, and politics. Here, Schiller instructs us in our engagement with figures such as Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, Jacques Rancière, Roberto Esposito, and others. María del Rosario Acosta López is Associate Professor of Philosophy at DePaul University. She has published several books, including La tragedia como conjuro: el problema de lo sublime en Friedrich Schiller. Jeffrey L. Se propone rastrear la interpretación que Schiller lleva a cabo en las Cartas sobre la educación estética del hombre del análisis kantiano del juicio de gusto puro como asociado con una suspensión de toda determinación que hace posible la experiencia de la belleza. Para Schiller, esto resulta en una temporalidad de lo bello experimentada como suspensión, que se torna adicionalmente en una suspensión de la temporalidad. El artículo muestra cómo este concepto resulta esencial para el concepto de crítica estética en (...) Schiller, que se relaciona con una capacidad de la experiencia estética de desactivar formas de violencia que, según el diagnóstico que Schiller propone en las Cartas, saturan su presente histórico. Con ello, el artículo pretende mostrar la pertinencia de la obra de Schiller para la configuración de este aspecto de la crítica filosófica-histórica. (shrink)

This paper presents an overview of my work in philosophy from my first book on Friedrich Schiller and the political sublime to my most recent project on listening to traumatic forms of violence. Starting with a reflection on the autobiographical character of philosophy, I propose to take up the question of an aesthetic dimension of philosophical critique, where aesthetics is understood as an always already embodied perspective on the world, on truth, and on philosophical activity, as well as an (...) always already political realm, where the distribution of sense pre-determines our approach and articulation of experience. Departing from aesthetics understood and deployed as critique, the paper moves on to ask about the specific frameworks of sense or grammars that determine in advance the conditions of audibility in the realms of memory-building and history-making—particularly in those contexts where historical, political, and institutional forms of violence produce silencing and erasure. Putting in dialogue the latter with decolonial studies, I interpret “traumatic violence” as a colonizing form of violence, understanding that one of its central aspects is that it is not only an assault on life but on the conditions of production of sense that make life legible as such. In this context, my project on grammars of listening seeks to carefully unpack these complex intersections while also explaining why I believe that a radical form of listening is an essential subversive/imaginative strategy against traumatic/colonial violence. Se analiza la reconstrucción del pensamiento romántico de Karl Heinz Bohrer y de su concepción estética de la subjetividad. Se expone el modo en que esta aparece en la reflexión estética de Friedrich Schlegel y se revisan las críticas de Bohrer a la tendencia de Schlegel a reinstaurar una imagen mítica de las relaciones subjetivas. Se examina la forma en que la segunda generación romántica supera este peligro y, por último, se indaga hasta qué punto la concepción de la (...) subjetividad estética que propone Bohrer resulta adecuada para comprender la producción artística contemporánea, así como algunos de los límites que presenta su lectura del pensamiento de Schlegel. Nacimiento, concepción y gestación, huevo cósmico, rueda eterna, noche, caos y oscuridad abisal son algunas de las imágenes que Friedrich Schelling asume a los efectos de reconceptualizar la especulación y, en concreto, de desfundar y superar el paradigma falogocéntrico del Acto trascendente, perfecto y pura luz. La propuesta schellingiana de un fundamento inmanente y material, pura potencia indeterminada e infinita, supone una re-sexualización del discurso filosófico que intentaremos mostrar en estas líneas.

O texto analisa como o problema da coisa em si em Kant, enquanto fundamento real ou não do fenômeno, foi reelaborado pelos filósofos pós-kantianos e como estes buscaram solucionar o possível dualismo da filosofia crítica. A investigação se concentra sobretudo na resposta de Schopenhauer ao problema, evidenciado pela primeira vez pelo filósofo Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi, um dos grandes críticos da filosofia transcendental e do idealismo.

El artículo se propone examinar la tensión entre la lengua castellana y la gramática en la novela El cuervo blanco, escrita por el controvertido escritor colombiano Fernando Vallejo, hoy radicado en México. Se trata de un texto híbrido que explora el pensamiento y la biografía del célebre filólogo Rufino José Cuervo. El libro indaga en sus papeles, cartas y libros; documentos en donde recoge sus conversaciones filosófico-filológicas con lingüistas europeos a propósito de las modalidades y formas idiomáticas que adquiere el (...) castellano en Colombia y Latinoamérica. La característica de este libro es su forma de narración, ya que más que darle primacía a los acontecimientos se preocupa de los tropos, giros, citas y efectos gramaticales que construyen la lógica de los documentos relacionados con la lengua de Estado. A nivel metafórico, Rufino José Cuervo es presentado como un “pájaro negro de alma blanca que tiene el don de la palabra”, es decir un “Cuervo blanco”, cuyo color es un índice de su excepcionalidad, nombre con el que lo identifica en una de sus cartas el lingüista alemán August Friedrich Pott, pero que el narrador convierte en el título de este curioso libro. In the present work, our aim is to emphasize the tensions between the concepts of irony and essay which Lukács uses in The soul and the Forms, and the way in which such concepts were used by Friedrich Schlegel at the end of the 18th. century. With that purpose, we will utilize the categories of "modern episteme" and "episteme of the forms" as they are formulated by Elías Palti. We believe that these categories will allow us to detect certain (...) breaks in the discursive level that remain hidden under the apparent continuity of some topics and make difficult the reading of The soul and the Forms.Nuestro objetivo en el presente trabajo es enfatizar las tensiones que existen entre el uso de los conceptos de ironía y ensayo, que hace Lukács en El Alma y las formas, y el modo en que tales conceptos son empleados por Friedrich Schlegel, a fines del siglo XVIII. A tal efecto nos valdremos de las categorías de episteme moderna y episteme de las formas, tal como son formuladas por Elías Palti. Creemos que es posible, en virtud de ellas, detectar ciertas rupturas a nivel discursivo que permanecen ocultas bajo la aparente continuidad de algunos tópicos y cuyo desconocimiento dificulta la lectura de El alma y las Formas. RESUMEN Se analiza la reconstrucción del pensamiento romántico de Karl Heinz Bohrer y de su concepción estética de la subjetividad. Se expone el modo en que esta aparece en la reflexión estética de Friedrich Schlegel y se revisan las críticas de Bohrer a la tendencia de Schlegel a reinstaurar una imagen mítica de las relaciones subjetivas. Se examina la forma en que la segunda generación romántica supera este peligro y, por último, se indaga hasta qué punto la concepción de (...) la subjetividad estética que propone Bohrer resulta adecuada para comprender la producción artística contemporánea, así como algunos de los límites que presenta su lectura del pensamiento de Schlegel. ABSTRACT The paper analyzes Karl Heinz Bohrer's reconstruction of Romantic thought and of its aesthetic conception of subjectivity. It shows how this reconstruction appears in Friedrich Schlegel's aesthetic reflections, and reviews Bohrer's critiques of Schlegel's tendency to reinstate a mythical image of subjective relations. Furthermore, the article examines the way in which the second generation of Romantics overcome this problem; inquires into the extent to which Bohrer's conception of aesthetic subjectivity might be adequate to understand contemporary artistic production; and, finally, discusses some limitations of Bohrer's reading of Schlegel's thought. Nell'estate del 1886 Nietzche cura a proprie spese, da Sils-Maria, in Engadina, la pubblicazione di Al di là del bene e del male. Tra le recensioni che più entusiasmarono il filosofo tedesco vi fu quella di Joseph Widmann, pubblicata su 'Der Bund' di Berna, il quale paragonò il libro a quei carri che, inalberando bandiera nera come segno di pericolo, trasportavano la dinamite attraverso le quiete valli svizzere passando per il tunnel del San Gottardo. Nietzsche comincia la sua guerra, (...) dopo una guerriglia condotta a colpi di aforismi, contro tutti i pregiudizi morali e filosofici, contro l'illusionismo magico di parole e concetti. Un attacco che diventa più organico e sistematico, e che con la stessa intensità poetica segue il dionisiaco abbraccio alla vita selvaggia dell Zarathustra. (shrink)

O objetivo geral desse artigo consiste em analisar a obra “ O nascimento da tragédia”, escrita por Friedrich Nietzsche em 1872, destacando sua compreensão sobre a cultura. Nela, foram tecidas análises iniciais sobre a cultura grega conceituando-se o papel do apolíneo e do dionisíaco como impulsos estéticos e cósmicos que originavam a tragédia; de Eurípedes e Sócrates como causadores de sua destruição devido à racionalidade intrínseca a um novo juízo artístico. Assim, as criações modernas emergiam constituídas por valores socráticos (...) que buscavam a verdade e não mais a experiência trágica. Como consequência, tem-se a decadência da cultura do homem grego e também do alemão do século XIX. Sua salvação dependeria da construção de uma nova cultura autêntica capaz de retornar a arte trágica grega, pois o filósofo a compreendida como justificação estética da existência, ilustrando a vida e elaborando-a a partir de diferentes máscaras. Dentre as soluções propostas, Nietzsche cita obra de Wagner como possibilidade de reavivamento dos impulsos apolíneo e dionisíaco por meio da música que daria novos sentidos a cultura ao assumir seu papel de renovação. Observa-se que o ponto essencial tratado nesta obra é que a única justificativa para a existência é a estética. (shrink)

En el presente trabajo, abordamos la obra de Friedrich Nietzsche con el objeto de analizar el modo en que su temprana crítica a las instituciones educativas alemanas y, específicamente, a la filosofía universitaria de su tiempo deriva de manera progresiva en los esbozos de una concepción tardía de la filosofía, fundada en la vida misma como medio de conocimiento a través del “experimento”. El diagnóstico nietzscheano es crítico y su resolución, un gran desafío para los futuros pensadores, a quienes (...) les demanda vivir experimentalmente sus palabras más allá de los libros. La cultura del ensayo emerge como horizonte final para esta praxis filosófico-experimental. (shrink)

Este artículo analiza los aspectos centrales de la concepción del Estado en El Anti-Edipo. Capitalismo y esquizofrenia, en particular los desarrollos ofrecidos en el capítulo tercero: "Salvajes, Bárbaros, Civilizados". La innovadora figura del Estado surge de un juego polifónico, abigarrado, discontinuo y elíptico con Karl Marx a partir de la noción de Modo de producción asiático; con Friedrich Nietzsche considerando la noción de origen y domesticación; y con Sigmund Freud siguiendo la noción de latencia. Los rasgos centrales para su (...) conceptualización se sintetizan en: 1) El Estado despótico como momento paradigmático de todo Estado y 2) el Estado es entendido como máquina social, en su doble articulación: social y libidinal. The article analyzes the key aspects of the conception of the State in The Anti-Oedipus. Capitalism and Schizophrenia, in particular the developments offered in chapter three: "Savages, Barbarians, Civilized". The innovative idea of the State arises from a game polyphonic from the notion of Asian Production Mode, from the concept of origin and domestication, and from the notion of latency. The central features for conceptualization are summarized as follows: 1) The Despotic State as paradigmatic moment of every State and 2) the State is understood as a social machine, in its double articulation: social and libidinal. This article deals with the analysis of neo-mythological and pantheistic subjects in the works of Friedrich Nietzsche and Knut Hamsun. The analytical comparison of Nietzsche’s philosophical concepts and Hamsun’s literary psychologism is poised to find an underlying understanding of human nature at the confluence of ethics and aesthetics - of goods and beauty, of evil and ugly. A precise definition of the aesthetic categories “Apollonian” and “Dionysian” is carried out based on Nietzsche’s work “The Birth of Tragedy from the (...) Spirit of Music”. The relevance of the Dionysian culture’s phenomena is based on the Nietzschean belief in an Übermensch within the modern mindset. The concept of “Dionysus” finds its continuation in the postmodern philosophy of Georges Bataille and Maurice Blanchot, in such archaic emotional and aesthetic aspects of human essence as violence and sacrifice understood in an extremely abstract sense. The authors stress that modern culture’s interest in violence and sacrifice is rooted in Nietzsche’s idea of Dionysius in the meaning of one of the beginnings of any segment of European culture. The foundations for overcoming postmodernism in the 21st century and the subsequent development of aesthetic views can be found in an attempt to revise the foundation of European culture through rethinking the concept of Übermensch-Zarathustra-Dionysus. Was sind die philosophischen Grundannahmen postmoderner Texte und inwieweit übernehmen sie das Denken Friedrich Nietzsches? Findet sich der postmoderne Stil umgekehrt schon bei Nietzsche selbst? Julia Maria Pollichs romanistisch ausgerichtete Studie verbindet eine originelle literaturwissenschaftliche Deutung von Nietzsches Schriften, welche dessen Übermenschen-Konzept in neuem Licht erscheinen lässt, mit dem Nachdenken über die philosophisch-poetologischen Unterschiede zwischen modernem und postmodernem Schreiben. Anhand von vier Autoren und Werken aus dem Zeitraum zwischen Fin de Siècle und dem französischen Poststrukturalismus wird so eine (...) This paper presents the manner in which the DNA, the molecule of life, was discovered. Unlike what many people, even biologists, believe, it was Johannes Friedrich Miescher who originally discovered and isolated nuclein, currently known as DNA, in 1869, 75 years before Watson and Crick unveiled its structure. Also, in this paper we show, and above all demonstrate, the serendipity of this major discovery. Like many of his contemporaries, Miescher set out to discover how cells worked by means of (...) studying and analysing their proteins. During this arduous task, he detected an unexpected substance of unpredicted properties. This new substance precipitated when he added acid to the solution and it dissolved again when adding alkali. Unexpectedly and by a mere fluke, Miescher was the first person to obtain a DNA precipitate. The paper then presents the term serendipity and discusses how it has influenced the discovery of other important scientific milestones. Finally, we address the question of whether serendipitous discoveries can be nurtured and what role the computer could play in this process. (shrink)
